Where to stay?
If you are coming from the west, look for cottage resorts along Route 60, west of Dwight. Our favourite vacation spot is:

with very friendly owners and a great family atmosphere. For other cottages resorts in the area, look for cottages in Algonquin Park.

Trekking, Hiking, and Trails in Algonquin Park

For the hearty adventurer, Algonquin Park offers the serene beauty and ruggedness of unspoiled nature. There are 15 magnificent short walking trails are available for day outings along the Highway 60 Corridor. In addition Algonquin Park has three overnight backpacking trails. Trails in Algonquin are well marked and booklets can guide you through the path with descriptions of surrounding fauna and flora. Portions of the trails are wheelchair accessible.

Canoeing in Algonquin Park
Algonquin Park is a paradise if you have a canoe or dont mind renting one.  Travel by canoe along more than 1,500 kilometres of routes and access parts of park only accessible by waterways. Canoe trails range from six to 88 kilometres in length. Be prepared to portage your canoe since some trails between lakes and streams can only be crossed on foot.  You can offen rent a canoe for a day at a local cottage resort, or canoe outfiters.

In Spring Time
If you come to Algonquin Park in the early spring time, you will find it very quiet and peaceful. Even at the most popular cottage resorts there are not as many tourists as in the summer time, you will find the natural beauty abundant. In the early spring you can find plenty wildlife, especially of moose, right by the roadside licking salt. Be cautious when driving at dusk and dawn.

Fall Season and Colours
Northern Ontario, and Algonquin Park are one of the places to see the fall colours. The Ontario fall colours usually peak about Sept 30 in Algonquin park, but it is best to call the locals ahead of time and check if the maple leafs are turning. Don’t forget to ask about the annual Wolf Howl, a truly unforgettable experience.

Fauna and Flora
Along with Algonquin's diversity in habitats comes an associated diversity in plant and animal life. You can see lots of moose at dawn and often hear wolf howls at night.  This is a great place for birwatchers and those who simply appriciate natural beauty.  There are 45 species of mammals, 262 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles and amphibians, 50 species of fish, and approximately 7000 species of insects to just name a few of the Algonquin Park residents.
